Sand and Mud: The Best Holding, With a Catch
Sand and soft mud generally give you the strongest, most reliable set. That's the good news. The catch is that a well set anchor in packed sand or deep mud can bury itself further than you'd expect, especially after a tide change or a stretch of current. It's not snagged on anything. It's just dug in deep enough that pulling straight up doesn't move it.
Rock Ledges and Coral: Where True Snags Happen
This is the classic stuck anchor scenario. The anchor slides into a crevice, wedges under a ledge, or hooks around a piece of structure, and pulling harder only sets it deeper. Rock and coral bottoms are where most boaters lose an anchor entirely, because the instinct is to power against it, which usually makes things worse.
Grass Beds: The Opposite Problem
Grass bottoms rarely cause a true stuck anchor. The more common issue is the anchor skating across the top without ever biting in, which means it isn't holding at all. Worth knowing, since a lot of boaters assume any anchoring trouble means something is snagged when sometimes it means the opposite.
Old Debris and Abandoned Mooring Chains
Busy anchorages accumulate junk over the years: old chain, sunk mooring blocks, discarded line. None of it shows up on a chart. An anchor can catch on debris that has nothing to do with the natural bottom, which is part of why the same spot can be fine for months and then suddenly isn't.
Matching Your Anchor Doesn't Eliminate the Risk
Boaters who do everything right, read the chart, pick the right anchor type for the bottom, still get stuck sometimes. That's the nature of anchoring in water you can't see into. The bottom composition changes the odds, but it never gets them to zero.
